At-Cost Pours in Redwood City!
January 31, 2011
If you live anywhere near Redwood City, CA, head over to Martins West Gastropub every Tuesday evening for at-cost pours of celebrated whiskies with David Driscoll from K&L Wines (my favorite local whisky retailer!). He’s doing $3 pours of Glendfiddich’s limited-release Snow Phoenix this coming Tuesday (February 1st at 6:00 PM). Original event posting is [...]
The Whisky Shelf: Covering the Bases
When your liquor cabinet is bursting at the seams, maybe consider winnowing your bottle count down by “covering the bases” of all the major types of malt whisky, and keeping just one bottle in each category: Peated, Sherried, Lowlander, Wine Finish, Talisker (Skye), Cask Strength, Heathery, World (Irish).

Loch Dhu (10 year)
January 26, 2011
Wow. This is a train-wreck of epic proportions, and it’s a wonder the company ever put it in a bottle. It’s intriguingly bad, like the nasal equivalent of a horrible traffic accident – you can’t help rubbernecking to look for body parts…
Caol Ila (12 year)
January 21, 2011
Flavor is not as peaty as it smells. Starts with a sandy sandstone dryness the turns mushroomy and very earthy, rich notes of dark soil and smoked meats midpalate. Much later, right before you swallow, an undertone of sweet fruitiness, exotic dark fruits, cassis, and licorice is revealed.
Ralfy’s Springbank Distillery Tour
January 19, 2011
In case anyone’s missed it, Ralfy over at ralfy.com is doing a fascinating handheld-cam tour of the Springbank Distillery in the Campbeltown area of Scotland in several parts. Check this link to catch up. I’ve already learned several things: That Longrow, Hazelburn, and Springbank single-malts are all owned by (and distilled at) the Springbank Distillery. [...]
The Balvenie (12 year) DoubleWood
January 17, 2011
This 12 year-old expression from The Balvenie is aged in first- or second-fill bourbon casks, with up to a further year in first-fill oloroso sherry casks. It stands on its own as a beautiful example of what quality Speyside whisky and careful oak aging can do, and with a fantastic price point.
Mecca.

Another Reason to Drink Scotch!
January 11, 2011
http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2010/aug/17/whisky-biobuel-scotland As if you needed another reason to drink Scotch, scientists in Scotland have discovered a way to use pot ale and spent grains from the production of whisky to make a butanol-based biofuel alternative to gasoline. Apparently this fuel can be used in traditional gasoline engines without modification. Cool stuff, and yet another reason [...]
The Dalmore (12 year)
January 6, 2011
Major sherry with citrus overtones. Orange peel and orange liqueur notes. Overall impression is of candied orange mixed with heavy sherry.
